With the monsoons expected to hit Gujarat coast in mid June, breeding season for the wild animals would begin.
The Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, the only abode of the Asiatic Lion which has registered 523 lions, will remain closed for tourists for four months beginning June 16.
The King of the Jungle will observe a break for its mating season. The Gir National Park, spread across 1,412 sq km, is scheduled to remain closed from June 16 to October 15. With the monsoons expected to hit Gujarat coast in mid June, breeding season for the wild animals would begin.
“Apart from breeding season for wild animals, the road conditions also deteriorate inside the jungle and sometimes it becomes unsafe for travellers,” said Sandeep Kumar Deputy Conservator of Forest, Sasan Gir.
Accidents occur too during this season. At times, the bridges get damaged because of flooding water from rivers passing through the sanctuary. Issues relating to safety of visitors also arise. Even the forest department starts maintenance work only in September as pick tourist season begins from November and continues till March end.
There are eight routes to the Gir National Park, which have been barricaded and entry of vehicles have been banned.It’s growing time for the vegetation too, which feed herbivores. According to wildlife experts, the period is also the best breeding time for leopards and peacock.
